Fashion illustrators

Fashion Illustrators

Part of my next project is to create fashion illustrations for my Autumn/Winter 10/11 design collection. My designs are in the style of Junya Watanabe and I hope to illustrate my collection with his signature style also. I am going to begin by researching some different illustrators and investigate their various techniques and methods.
Veronica Ballart

I have started with the young and contemporary illustrator,Veronica Ballart. Her soft lines and harmonising use of colour have inspired me to investigate watercolours and gouache as a illustration technique. Her illustrations are delicate and evoke a definate sense of femininity.

Mats Gustafson

Gustafson is an established illustrator that has worked with designers such as Comme des garcons, Chanel and Yohji Yamamoto. His abstract and conceptual style fits well with the designer I am currently researching(Junya Watanabe). I particularly like the Comme des Garcons illustration featured on the left.

Designer Inspiration-Junya Watanabe

Junya Watanabe

High street clothing is generally inspired by catwalk collections that top designers have previously created for shows in Paris, Milan, London etc. I have recently been researching the conceptual designer Junya Watanabe the protege of Comme des Garcon's founder, (Rei Kawakubo).I have researched many different areas of his work focusing mainly on his ready to wear collections.

Browns London
Watanabe is exclusively stocked in only two locations in the UK ;Browns and Dover Street Market.I recently visited Browns on South Molton street London and managed to take a couple of discreet photos of Watanabes ready to wear Autumn/Winter 09 collection! The clothing featured below is from the discount store (Browns for Less) and from one of Watanbe's past collections.

The bog standard coat is a key item for every Autumn/Winter. Alexa Chung is shown here wearing a simple blue coat similar to the Topshop duffle coat pictured beside it.

Autumn/Winter 09/10 Trends

Topshop

Always a relentless follower of trends Topshop has gone shoulder pads and sparkly sequins galore for their Autumn/Winter 09/10 collections. There is a strong space theme within many of the capsule collections.

H & M

H & M have also taken influence from the space age theme. The T-shirt shown below has represented it in more of a graphic manner.

Celebrity Fashion

David Koma a recently graduated fashion designer has caused a spark in the world of Fashion and Celebrity. After his haute couture was worn by the 'Nation's sweetheart' Cheryl Cole on one of her weekly appearances on the Xfactor, the forward thinking garment was subject to plenty of speculation. Although it was not received well by some, it caused plenty of publicity for the young designer's new and exciting Autumn/Winter 09/10 futuristic collection.Even further publicity for the designer came around when Beyonce Knowles wore a different but similar dress from the same collection to the MTV awards.

High street collaberations

The success of designer collaberations with brands such as H and M are not just for H and M's regular customers. Collaberations are one of the few solutions for retail during the economic downturn. Both the designer and high street store widen their customer market and pleased cutomers can own a 'designer' garment or accessory and dont have to fork out the usual extortionate cost. During the current financial climate more high street and designer collaberations are being done than ever.

After the success of the previous Kate Moss collections Topshop have introduced a new range with Christopher Kane (see jumper above). More example of the Christopher Kane collection below.

Another readily awaited collection is the Jimmy Choo collaboration with H and M appearing in selected stores on on November 14th. Although get there quickly, as an ex-member of staff I can verify that after witnessing the launch of past collaberations, there will be scrabbling to get in the store at 9am and plenty of hair pulling! Pictures of the campaign shown below.
